The NCAA Rules Subcommittee has officially approved the implementation of the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenge system for college baseball. This decision follows a successful pilot program during the SEC Tournament in Hoover, where the technology functioned without significant operational issues.

Under the proposed rules, teams receive three challenges per game. If a challenge is successful, the team retains the challenge. A bonus challenge is awarded for extra innings. Only the pitcher, catcher, or the current batter may signal for a review, and they have a window of two to three seconds to request the challenge after a pitch.

While the Baseball Oversight Committee must still provide final approval, the system is expected to roll out for the 2027 season. The move aligns college baseball standards closer to professional levels. Technology like Trackman will power the system wherever available. Commissioner Greg Sankey noted that this addition supports the development of student-athletes by introducing professional-grade accuracy and procedural mechanics into the collegiate game.
