DEEP DIVE: The fundamental problem with WVU's offense in 2025 (and why it can improve)
The 2025 season for West Virginia men's basketball left plenty of room for frustration on the offensive side of the court. While the defensive unit performed at a high level by finishing 18th nationally in adjusted efficiency, the offensive output failed to meet even baseline expectations for a competitive squad. Ranking 123rd in adjusted efficiency and placing 15th out of 16 teams in Big 12 conference play creates a clear picture of the struggles faced by the team throughout the year.
Several statistical indicators highlight the nature of these problems. The team struggled significantly from behind the arc and recorded poor performance at the free throw line. These shooting deficiencies, combined with an elevated turnover rate, stalled the halfcourt attack and made it difficult for the Mountaineers to maintain momentum against conference opponents.
Looking ahead, the path forward requires addressing these fundamental flaws. The gap between the defensive success and offensive output is a primary area for the coaching staff to reconcile during the upcoming cycle. Achieving a more balanced team structure depends on turning these identified weaknesses into consistent improvements before the next season tips off.
