Vanderbilt's next QB1 doesn't need to perform like Pavia, says Lea

Vanderbilt football is preparing for a new season with a significant void to fill at the quarterback position. Pavia was a standout last season, leading the Commodores to an impressive 10-3 record while setting major school records in passing and rushing yards.

Despite Pavia's massive impact last year, Coach Lea is tempering expectations for the next leader of the offense. He stated that the incoming starter does not need to replicate Pavia's specific style of play. Instead, the team is working on ways to strengthen the overall roster to take pressure off the quarterback position. The competition for the starting job is active, featuring four players including high-profile recruit Jared Curtis.

Recruiting Curtis from Georgia to Vanderbilt is a notable moment for the program. Lea pointed out that landing such a top-tier prospect demonstrates growth for a school that struggled with a 2-10 record only a few years ago. He emphasized that no specific role was guaranteed to the freshman, as the coaching staff maintains a firm focus on competition during training camp.

As the team heads into fall preparations, the staff plans to exercise patience with their young talent. Lea noted that he wants to make sure players are ready before putting them in game situations. Players like receiver Junior Sherrill believe the team is still overlooked despite their recent performance, and they are ready to show the conference what they are capable of this year.
