Georgia running back Dante Dowdell is receiving treatment for serious injuries sustained in a recent ATV accident. Head coach Kirby Smart confirmed the incident during SEC Media Days, stating that Dowdell is currently under care at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. The hospital is known for its specialized work with spinal cord and brain injuries.

Dowdell, who joined the Georgia program this offseason as a transfer from Kentucky, was involved in the accident while visiting home in Picayune, Mississippi. Smart expressed uncertainty regarding a return timeline for the tailback. He noted that while Dowdell is out of the initial critical range, the full scope of his recovery and status for the upcoming season remain unclear.

The 6-foot-2, 227-pound athlete arrived at Georgia following previous stints at Oregon, Nebraska, and Kentucky. He appeared in the 2025 season as the Wildcats' second-leading rusher, recording 112 carries for 560 yards and three touchdowns. Georgia had planned for Dowdell to feature prominently in their offensive rotation alongside returning starter Nate Frazier.

Smart and the rest of the coaching staff are focused on providing support to Dowdell and his family. Several teammates have visited the facility to offer encouragement during his recovery process.
