Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes fully cleared for camp, feeling 'amazing'
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is officially back on the field. Following his rehabilitation from a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee, team medical staff and surgeon Dr. Dan Cooper cleared the star quarterback for full participation in training camp starting this week.
Mahomes arrived at the Missouri Western State campus in St. Joseph, Missouri, with a clean bill of health. He stated that he feels stronger than he has in the past and is eager to rejoin his teammates for 11-on-11 team repetitions. This marks a critical step in his return after he sustained the injury last December. Throughout his recovery, the quarterback remained focused on the goal of starting for the season opener against the Denver Broncos on September 14.
Head coach Andy Reid confirmed that he does not intend to limit Mahomes during practice periods. The team expects him to take his usual reps with key skill players such as Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Kenneth Walker III. While Mahomes will continue wearing a protective brace and compression sleeve on his left leg, the medical team is satisfied with his ability to cut, run, and change direction at full speed.
Mahomes spent his time during the offseason working through a rigorous rehabilitation plan. He noted that he draws inspiration and practical advice from other veteran athletes, including Tom Brady and Tyrann Mathieu, who managed successful careers following similar ligament surgeries. The focus for the remainder of camp is to refine his decision-making and mechanics as the team prepares for the regular season. The decision regarding his appearance in preseason games remains pending, with the coaching staff and medical personnel holding final authority on his usage.
