The Islanders Will Soon Have A Buyout Decision To Make
The New York Islanders face a critical decision this week as a second buyout window opens for their roster. This window arrives following Alex Jefferies reaching a new contract agreement after his recent salary arbitration filing. The club now has 48 hours to determine if they will shed significant salary cap weight.
GM Mathieu Darche has managed a quiet summer following a season that missed the playoffs. The front office brought in Matias Maccelli, Matthew Kessel, and Vitek Vanecek, while also re-signing Tony DeAngelo. Despite these moves, the team remains tight against the salary cap with less than $3 million in projected space to start the campaign. This constraint is largely a result of midseason acquisitions including Ondrej Palat and Brayden Schenn, whose contracts carry heavy weight into this year.
The roster configuration limits the buyout options. Only players who were on the team at the trade deadline and earn $4 million or more are eligible. Based on these parameters, Ondrej Palat emerges as the primary candidate. His tenure with the team resulted in a single goal over 29 games, providing a poor return for his $6 million cap hit.
Buying out Palat would result in a $1.65 million dead money charge for the next two seasons. However, the move would also create $4.35 million in immediate savings for the upcoming year. This capital would grant the Islanders the necessary flexibility to pursue more productive free agents still on the market, such as Vladimir Tarasenko or Michael Bunting.
While second buyout windows are seldom used in the NHL, the logic for a change in New York exists. Darche must now weigh the benefit of replacing a struggling veteran against the cost of carrying future dead cap space. The window is narrow and the decision will likely define the team's ability to remain competitive for the final roster spots.
