Penguins sign Kuzmenko in hopes of replacing Mantha's production
The Pittsburgh Penguins are entering the 2026-27 season with a tactical shift in their roster composition. Andrei Kuzmenko has joined the fold on a one-year deal, stepping into the role previously held by Anthony Mantha. With 25 points in 52 games last year, Kuzmenko provides the scoring presence the team requires to remain competitive in the Metropolitan Division.
Management also added Nicholas Robertson via trade, securing his services for two years to bolster the forward group. On the blue line, Trevor van Riemsdyk arrives on a two-year contract, offering veteran stability alongside Erik Karlsson. These additions are calculated moves intended to support the core unit of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang as they pursue another Stanley Cup title.
Despite the departure of key players such as goaltender Stuart Skinner and penalty-killer Noel Acciari, the team maintains a focus on depth. Young prospects like Sergei Murashov and Harrison Brunicke represent the next phase of growth for the organization. Murashov, in particular, showed promise in goal last season, posting impressive numbers in the American Hockey League and earning his first NHL shutout.
General Manager Kyle Dubas described the team approach as measured, prioritizing long-term stability over reactionary changes. While the team remains potent offensively—finishing high in high-danger scoring chances last season—the focus for this campaign is clear. The management group intends to build around the existing foundation, ensuring the stars have the supporting pieces needed to perform at an elite level when the season begins.
