Ipswich sign Japan forward Maeda from Celtic

Ipswich Town has confirmed the signing of Japan forward Daizen Maeda from Celtic. The 28-year-old moves to the Premier League side in a deal reported at £10m. Maeda joins the Tractor Boys on a three-year contract as the club looks to strengthen its squad following promotion to the top flight.

During his time at Celtic, Maeda made 212 appearances and scored 79 goals. He secured five league titles, three Scottish Cups, and two League Cups in Scotland. His performance in the 2025-26 season proved particularly vital, as he shifted to a central attacking role and scored several game-winning goals, including a late decisive strike against Hearts in the league title race.

Manager Gary O'Neil expressed confidence in the new addition, citing Maeda's work rate and physical attributes as assets for the coming season. O'Neil noted that Maeda has the proven ability to score and create opportunities at a high level. The forward joins a list of new arrivals at Portman Road, which includes Issa Diop and Abdul Fatawu.

Maeda shared his gratitude toward the Celtic supporters and staff in a farewell message. He described his four-and-a-half-year stint in Glasgow as the most special chapter of his career to date. The forward is now set to focus on his goal of competing in the Premier League under the guidance of O'Neil.
