Tempo coach to Reese: Used phrase 'I shouldn't have used'

Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello has issued a formal apology to Angel Reese following a confrontation during Friday's game against the Atlanta Dream. During the contest, Brondello was recorded referencing Reese with the phrase 'protected species' while arguing a foul call with officials after an injury to Tempo player Nyara Sabally.

Brondello, who is from Australia, clarified that the phrase was intended to express frustration with the officiating and the perceived lack of calls against a specific player. She acknowledged that the comment was inappropriate and stated she takes full responsibility for her language. The coach noted that her words were meant to criticize the referees, but instead unfairly targeted the player involved in the play.

The situation gained significant attention because the phrase carries a different history in the United States, particularly regarding Black women. Brondello stated she understands that her words caused impact beyond her original intent and expressed regret for the hurt caused to the community. She emphasized her respect for Reese as both an athlete and an individual.

Following the game, Reese addressed the incident on social media. The WNBA is expected to discuss the matter during an upcoming scheduled meeting between players and commissioner Cathy Engelbert. No immediate disciplinary action or additional comment has been issued by the league office at this time. Brondello remains focused on her first season with the Tempo organization as the league moves toward the upcoming All-Star break.
