Amazon reports strong profits and net sales for 2Q, fueled by robust growth in cloud computing unit
Amazon reported significant financial results for the second quarter, demonstrating strong performance across its core business units. The company posted net sales of 148 billion dollars, an increase from 134.4 billion dollars during the same period last year. Net income reached 13.5 billion dollars, up from 6.7 billion dollars in the second quarter of 2023.
Cloud computing remains the primary driver of this profit growth. Amazon Web Services generated 26.3 billion dollars in revenue, marking a 19 percent increase compared to the previous year. This division continues to be the most profitable segment of the company, providing consistent cash flow that supports broader business operations.
Retail operations also showed improved efficiency. Lower fulfillment costs and faster delivery times contributed to higher margins in the North American market. The company focused on localized distribution centers to reduce transit distances and associated expenses. These operational changes resulted in greater profitability per unit sold.
Advertising services grew by 20 percent, reaching 12.8 billion dollars for the quarter. This expansion indicates that businesses are continuing to invest in Amazon platform tools to reach consumers. Subscription services, which include Prime memberships, also saw a steady revenue increase to 10.9 billion dollars.
Looking ahead, management stated they expect third-quarter sales to grow between 8 and 11 percent. The company plans to continue its investment in server infrastructure and AI hardware to maintain its market position in the cloud sector. Leadership remains focused on cost management while balancing the need for long-term capacity expansion in its logistics network.
