Anthropic is in talks to lease AI computing power from Meta in a $10 billion deal
Anthropic is exploring a significant move to increase its computational capacity. Recent reports indicate the AI startup is in preliminary discussions to lease computing power from Meta. The proposed arrangement could reach a value of 10 billion dollars over a two-year period, marking a notable shift in how major tech firms manage and monetize their internal infrastructure.
This potential deal follows a pattern of high-stakes infrastructure negotiations within the sector. Earlier this year, Anthropic secured a separate agreement with SpaceX involving a 45 billion dollar contract for access to the Colossus 1 data center. These moves highlight the ongoing competition for hardware resources, specifically Nvidia chips, which remain the primary constraint for developers aiming to scale large language models.
For Meta, this proposal aligns with recent comments from Mark Zuckerberg regarding the exploration of cloud computing services. By leasing excess capacity, Meta could create a new revenue stream to offset its substantial capital expenditures on AI infrastructure. The company plans to spend up to 145 billion dollars in 2026, and demonstrating a path toward direct returns on this hardware investment is a priority for the leadership team.
Discussions remain in the early stages. Both companies have declined to provide formal comments, and the agreement includes provisions allowing either party to exit before the final terms are set. While the outcome remains uncertain, the interest alone underscores the intensity of the current market for processing power. Infrastructure access is now a defining factor for long-term growth among AI companies.
