Galaxy sets up $5 million fund to help shield Bitcoin against quantum computing threats
Galaxy Digital has launched a $5 million initiative to defend the Bitcoin network against the future threat of quantum computing. The Galaxy Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative aims to support developers working on essential security upgrades. These include the creation of quantum-resistant signature schemes and new tools for secure wallet migration.
While current experts note that quantum computers remain unable to break modern blockchain encryption, the firm warns that preparation takes significant time. Upgrading the network to post-quantum standards involves complex coordination across exchanges, developers, and global users. Proactive measures are necessary to protect the roughly 6.9 million bitcoin, valued at approximately $461 billion, that could face risks if cryptography becomes vulnerable.
This funding arrives as government interest in quantum technology increases. The U.S. government recently moved to invest billions in quantum systems capable of breaking standard internet encryption. Galaxy Digital intends for this fund to serve as a starting point, hoping other industry participants will provide additional resources to accelerate these cryptographic defenses.
Interested developers can now apply for grants through the initiative. By addressing these challenges today, the firm aims to secure the long-term integrity of the network before potential technological breakthroughs create an existential risk.
