Taking H2 to the Edge of Computing: ECL, PowerCell Teaming on Hydrogen Infrastructure for Data Centers
Edge Cloud Link is shifting the standard for data center power. The company just entered an agreement with PowerCell Group to integrate hydrogen fuel cell technology into its AI-focused data center platform. This partnership aims to move beyond traditional electrical grids by using hydrogen to provide a primary power source that bypasses typical capacity constraints.
The project uses PowerCell's PS190 fuel cell systems combined with a distributed master controller platform. This tech allows ECL to manage power loads across fuel cells, battery storage, and the grid. ECL plans to expand this infrastructure with an additional 300 MW of capacity through a non-binding arrangement, bolstered by PowerCell’s manufacturing partnership with Bosch.
ECL is addressing the power intensity of AI model training by moving toward off-grid systems. Beyond power generation, the technology offers water-free cooling, as the hydrogen process produces usable water. The company is currently accepting tenant inquiries for its Santa Clara facility for 2027 deployments, following two years of successful testing at its Mountain View location.
This move signals a shift for industrial-scale computing. By prioritizing hydrogen as a base load, companies like ECL are finding ways to grow data capacity without waiting years for grid connection approvals.
