IBM buys HRL Laboratories in shift to two-track quantum computing strategy
IBM is expanding its quantum computing footprint by acquiring HRL Laboratories. This move adds a second approach to their existing strategy as the company seeks to build practical machines capable of solving problems beyond the reach of current technology.
HRL Laboratories, previously a research arm of Hughes Aircraft and owned by Boeing and General Motors, specializes in electron spin quantum circuits. These circuits allow for smaller designs compared to the superconducting circuits IBM currently uses. IBM confirmed that Boeing and General Motors will remain partners in these quantum developments.
The integration of HRL technology follows a recent government initiative involving a 1 billion dollar allocation to establish a new quantum chip factory in New York. While IBM continues to prioritize its superconducting systems, leadership at the company views the addition of spin qubits as a necessary step for the future of the hardware. They intend to maintain parallel development paths for these technologies.
