Intel debuts new chip for space computing
Intel is entering the space computing market with a new processor called Starfire. This hardware aims to bring high-performance system-on-chip technology to orbit, addressing the growing need for onboard artificial intelligence and data processing in both commercial and government satellites. The space environment presents significant challenges for electronics, specifically radiation exposure and extreme thermal cycling. To counter these issues, the new chip integrates multiple computing functions into a single unit, which helps reduce the overall size, weight, and power consumption of spacecraft.
The company is positioning this product to handle routine operations like telemetry and command sequencing alongside more intensive AI workloads, such as sensor fusion and autonomous scheduling. By adapting modern architecture for space, the team hopes to provide a viable alternative to the older, lower-performance processors that have long dominated the industry. Development was funded internally, reflecting a long-term commitment to the satellite sector as a critical domain for national security and commercial innovation.
Intel plans to offer two versions of the processor to accommodate different energy budgets. The low-power variant will operate at under 10 watts, while the high-performance model will offer greater capability for complex missions. Although radiation testing is still underway, early results appear promising. The company expects to finalize characterization by the end of the third quarter and is currently in discussions with government agencies regarding potential experimental flight opportunities.
To ensure reliability and reduce supply chain risks, Intel has implemented a domestic assembly and qualification process. While some components originate from international suppliers, the critical screening and testing steps take place in the United States. This approach aligns with broader federal initiatives to bolster the domestic semiconductor industrial base. As spacecraft manufacturers move toward more autonomous operations, Intel intends to act as a technical partner rather than a traditional component vendor, providing software support and documentation to help builders integrate the new architecture.
