IonQ is now a cloud access provider for the FABrIC Quantum Computing Sandbox in Canada. This move follows a formal agreement with CMC Microsystems, an organization that manages key technology initiatives for the Canadian government. The collaboration brings trapped-ion quantum computing systems directly to academics and local enterprises, removing barriers for researchers who need high-performance hardware.
The initiative operates under the broader FABrIC program, which receives support from the Government of Canada’s Strategic Response Fund. By integrating these quantum systems, the partnership provides the engineering infrastructure necessary for Canadian innovators to move from theoretical research into practical applications. This gives small and medium-sized businesses the same tools used by large-scale commercial partners.
According to leadership from both organizations, the goal is to shift the market from simple access to meaningful output. For Canadian researchers, this means they can start building expertise and testing workflows on IonQ’s commercial technology immediately. The program aims to strengthen the national semiconductor and quantum ecosystem by providing a clear path from experimentation to industrial deployment.
IonQ continues to expand its international footprint with operations now spanning several continents, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, South Korea, and Italy. This latest step in Canada builds on the company’s recent performance milestones in two-qubit gate fidelity and overall system capacity. As more institutions gain access to these cloud-based resources, the focus shifts toward solving problems in materials science, logistics, and drug discovery.
