The National Center for Supercomputing Applications is partnering with UCLA and four other institutions to launch the Interactive Discovery Laboratory (iDLab). This national project aims to bridge the gap between high-performance computing resources and researchers who need a more intuitive way to process data. By moving away from complex command-line interfaces, the initiative intends to open advanced computing to a broader range of disciplines beyond traditional STEM fields.
The project operates with $9 million in funding from the National Science Foundation. The core goal is to build a unified, browser-based environment that connects various national computing centers and cloud platforms. This interface will serve as a central portal for data sets and applications, effectively acting as a front door for the research community.
As part of this effort, NCSA will integrate its Delta and DeltaAI systems into the new environment. These systems are known for their strong processing capabilities and current role within the national cyberinfrastructure ecosystem. Brett Bode, the deputy project director for Delta and DeltaAI, notes that this partnership is a strategic move to ensure that powerful computing tools remain available and approachable for diverse scientific teams.
By simplifying access to these technical assets, the iDLab project hopes to accelerate discovery across the country. Researchers will soon have a single space to access the computing power of the Delta systems alongside other national resources. This shift in accessibility is expected to increase the output of data-heavy research projects while reducing the technical barriers that often stall progress in non-technical research areas.
