TIER IV and Renesas are launching a new collaboration to advance software-defined vehicles. By integrating TIER IV's open-source Autoware software with Renesas' R-Car Gen 5 automotive system-on-chips, the companies aim to create a unified platform for AI-native autonomous driving.

This platform serves as a foundation for automakers and Tier 1 suppliers to build advanced driver assistance systems and Level 4 autonomous driving technology. The partnership addresses the industry shift toward software-led vehicle capabilities, allowing for better integration between AI models and hardware computing power.

TIER IV plans to demonstrate this technology, including their E2E AI driving models running on R-Car processors, at Automotive World 2026 in September. The collaboration represents a move to standardize open-source autonomous driving tools on high-performance automotive hardware.

Beyond current generations, the project covers long-term developments such as AI accelerators optimized for transformer-based models and sensing technologies like LiDAR and 4D radar. This joint effort intends to make production-ready autonomous driving more accessible across the automotive sector.
