The University of Utah recently launched Redtail, a high-speed supercomputer designed to address complex research and state-level challenges. Located in a data center in Bluffdale, the machine currently ranks as the fifth-fastest supercomputer at a public university in the United States and holds the 159th spot globally.
Redtail serves as more than just hardware. Officials describe it as an ecosystem that combines processing power with software, data infrastructure, and human expertise. The project resulted from a $50 million public-private partnership involving the state of Utah, the university, and the Huntsman Family Foundation. This initiative aims to provide researchers, students, and entrepreneurs across the Utah System of Higher Education with access to advanced computing capabilities.
To address the energy demands typical of such technology, the university placed the system within an existing, efficient data center rather than constructing a new facility. The project leaders prioritize operational efficiency and research into cooling methods to mitigate environmental impacts. Users are encouraged to evaluate the necessity of each computation, reinforcing a focus on responsible technology usage that aligns with the state’s human-guided artificial intelligence initiative.
Currently, the university is accepting proposals for early access to the system. Researchers from institutions including Utah State University, Utah Valley University, and Salt Lake Community College may compete for resources through the new portal. The goal is to establish a workflow that serves as a model for other states seeking to provide academic and public access to high-performance computing through collaborative funding.
