IonQ and CMC Microsystems recently signed a memorandum of understanding to bring commercial quantum computing resources to Canadian researchers and businesses. This agreement makes IonQ a primary cloud provider for the FABrIC Quantum Computing Sandbox. FABrIC is a Canadian initiative backed by government funding to support local innovation in semiconductors and quantum technology.

The partnership allows academic institutions and small-to-medium enterprises across Canada to access IonQ's trapped-ion hardware. This hardware is known for its high two-qubit gate fidelity, which helps developers perform complex calculations with fewer errors. By integrating these systems into the sandbox, Canadian users gain a direct line to commercial-grade quantum tools for application development.

Gordon Harling, the CEO of CMC Microsystems, noted that the goal is to bridge the gap between initial access and practical application. By pairing the technology with expert guidance, the program seeks to ensure Canadian innovators can build expertise that translates into real-world projects. IonQ sees this move as a way to grow its presence in the Canadian market while providing the technical infrastructure needed for advanced research.

This collaboration marks another step in IonQ’s international expansion. The company continues to position its hardware as a core component for industries ranging from pharmaceutical research to logistics. As the FABrIC program progresses, Canadian researchers will use these cloud-accessible quantum systems to explore new computational models and solve problems that traditional computers currently find difficult to manage.
