Quantum Computing Startup in Santa Barbara Gets $54 Million from UC Investments

Santa Barbara startup Qolab has secured $54.2 million in Series B financing. The company works to translate decades of scientific research into scalable quantum technologies that address real-world problems. Led by UC Investments, the funding aims to bridge the gap between breakthrough semiconductor manufacturing and practical quantum innovation.

Qolab co-founder John Martinis, a professor at UC Santa Barbara, received a Nobel Prize in 2025 for his foundational work in physics. His research previously led to the creation of a 53-qubit processor that achieved quantum supremacy. The current startup focuses on reducing the cost of quantum computing while increasing system capabilities.

Quantum computing relies on qubits instead of the standard zeros and ones found in normal computers. This technology holds potential for designing new materials and breaking complex encryptions. The company plans to use this capital to deepen collaborations within the University of California research ecosystem and expand its partnerships across the globe.

CEO Alan Ho stated that solving difficult challenges in this field requires close ties to the semiconductor industry. By aligning with UC Investments and other financial partners, Qolab intends to move from theoretical physics to reliable, scalable systems. This investment marks a transition as quantum research enters an era of commercial application.
