Railway edge computing platform simplifies intelligent onboard systems
FORTEC United Kingdom has released the Axiomtek tBOX210 to address the shifting needs of modern railway infrastructure. As trains incorporate more digital services, from AI-based surveillance to real-time passenger information, the demand for onboard processing power continues to grow. This new edge computing platform acts as a consolidated hub for these workloads.
The device uses Intel 14th Generation Core processors and DDR5 memory to manage intensive tasks. These include recording high-definition video streams and analyzing operational data directly on the vehicle. By moving compute power to the edge, the system reduces reliance on remote server connections and lowers latency for time-sensitive diagnostics.
Hardware durability is a core requirement for rail operations. The unit features four M12 X-coded 2.5GbE ports, which offer high-bandwidth connectivity while maintaining resistance to the shock and vibration common on moving trains. It also supports multiple 2.5-inch SATA drives and NVMe storage, which makes data management for security logs straightforward and secure.
The platform handles varying power environments with a 24 to 110VDC wide input range. This allows for deployment across diverse international rail systems without requiring custom power modifications. Compliance with EN 50155, EN 45545-2, and NFPA 130 ensures the hardware meets strict safety and environmental standards for rolling stock. Integration support for 5G, LTE, and GPS provides the connectivity necessary for modern predictive maintenance and fleet management.
