Rigetti Expands Collaboration with HPE and Pittsburgh
Rigetti Computing, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center are joining forces to build a new hybrid quantum-classical supercomputing testbed. Known as TangleLab, this project receives support from a 5 million dollar National Science Foundation grant. The system will feature a 9-qubit Novera quantum processor integrated with classical high-performance computing hardware.
This initiative marks a milestone in the ongoing partnership between Rigetti and HPE to commercialize quantum-enabled systems. By combining superconducting quantum gate speeds with classical architecture, the team expects to provide researchers and educators with the tools needed to explore advanced quantum-classical workflows. The setup aims to address critical investment priorities in quantum information science and artificial intelligence.
The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center will manage access to the system through a competitive proposal process. This allows researchers to request dedicated time on the machine, while educators gain access for classroom instruction and workshops. To support those new to the technology, the center will provide onboarding resources, training, and research consulting services.
Construction on the TangleLab data center is scheduled to start on September 1, 2026. Project leaders expect the system to reach full operational status by 2027. This facility represents a practical step toward integrating quantum processors with traditional computing, AI, and networking infrastructure to solve complex computational problems.
