Apple offers a specific tool for parents who want to manage their child's device usage during the academic day. The Schooltime feature, available on Apple Watch through the Family Setup program, restricts access to apps and notifications while the user is in class. This creates a focused environment that prevents the device from becoming a source of distraction during study hours.
To activate this feature, parents must use the Apple Watch app on their own iPhone. After navigating to the Family Watches section, users can define specific daily schedules that lock the watch face. During these hours, the device displays only the current time and date. If a child needs to check a message or handle an urgent matter, they can bypass the lock by pressing the Digital Crown, but the parent receives a notification if this occurs, ensuring oversight remains clear.
This functionality differs from the standard Do Not Disturb mode. While Do Not Disturb merely silences incoming alerts, Schooltime imposes a stricter lockdown on the interface. It removes the ability to scroll through apps or interact with notifications, creating a distinct boundary between school hours and personal time. The watch automatically reactivates the restriction once the child lowers their wrist.
Parents interested in this setup need a cellular-capable Apple Watch Series 6, SE, or Ultra paired with their iPhone. A cellular plan is not mandatory to enable the scheduling features. This approach provides a way to maintain contact with children who are not yet ready for a smartphone while keeping their focus on classroom instruction rather than the wrist-based device.
