A New Tracker Arrives
Google launched the Pixel Tag this week, positioning it as the first true first-party competitor to the Apple AirTag. It uses the Find Hub network to track items, leveraging the scale of Android devices worldwide to help users locate lost belongings. The hardware itself seems competitive, featuring Ultra-Wideband precision and an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. Users pair the device directly to their account, and location data is end-to-end encrypted for security.
Despite these specifications, the Pixel Tag shares a major limitation with every other tracker on the market. It cannot broadcast to more than one network simultaneously. When a user selects Find Hub during setup, that is the only network the device communicates with. If a user loses an item in an area crowded with iPhones, the tag will not be detected by the Apple Find My network. This remains true even if the user owns both types of devices or lives in a home with multiple platforms.
The Problem with Network Silos
Crowdsourced tracking relies entirely on the density of devices participating in the network. While Apple benefits from widespread automatic participation among iPhone users, Google's Find Hub requires users to manually enable a specific setting to contribute their device to the network. This gap creates a situation where Android trackers may have fewer opportunities to be spotted, particularly in regions with high iPhone market share. When a tracker is restricted to a single, smaller network, the chances of recovering a lost item drop.
Travelers and households with mixed device ecosystems suffer the most from this fragmentation. If a traveler leaves their bag in an airport full of Apple devices, their Pixel Tag remains silent because it cannot ping those phones. A device capable of broadcasting to both networks would theoretically double the number of potential nodes, making item recovery faster and more reliable. Currently, switching between platforms is not a simple toggle; it requires a factory reset and a full re-pairing process that resets the tracker to its original state.
Seeking True Interoperability
Several third-party companies, including Chipolo and Pebblebee, already market trackers that claim compatibility with both Apple and Google networks. However, these products do not break the fundamental limitation of single-network operation. These tags require the user to choose one ecosystem during the initial configuration. Moving to the other ecosystem later requires the same manual reset and setup process as a single-platform device. No consumer-grade Bluetooth tracker currently exists that can ping both networks at the same time.
Google had a chance to set a new standard with the Pixel Tag by prioritizing broad interoperability. By choosing to lock the device into the Find Hub ecosystem, the company prioritized control over utility. The technical barriers are admittedly high, as Apple maintains a closed system for its Find My network. Still, analysts suggest Google should push for open standards in this space, similar to its strategy with RCS messaging. Until manufacturers bridge this divide, users remain locked into specific networks, and the effectiveness of Bluetooth tracking will continue to suffer from these artificial boundaries.
