Google is shifting the focus of its wearable tech. With the launch of the Pixel Watch 5, the company is prioritizing safety features that act as an airbag for your wrist. Product managers at Google describe this as a move to address population-level health issues rather than just fitness tracking.
Key among these new tools is Breathing Emergency Detection. This feature monitors for sudden drops in blood oxygen levels paired with a lack of movement, alerting emergency services if a user cannot cancel the countdown. It joins the existing Loss of Pulse Detection, a capability currently unavailable on competing devices.
Google developed these features through testing in controlled, hypoxic laboratory environments. The engineers behind the project emphasize that while they hope users never need these tools, the systems are prepared for rare, high-stakes emergencies. This strategy aims to uncover invisible health crises that occur without warning.
While fitness metrics remain present, the design philosophy behind the Pixel Watch 5 suggests a transition toward life-saving technology. Google intends to expand these safety capabilities to other devices in its lineup, though availability for specific models will vary. These additions position the device as a serious safety tool for potential health emergencies.
