Developers within the open-source community face significant hurdles when attempting to rescue these abandoned devices. AsteroidOS represents the primary effort to repurpose these watches. This Linux-based operating system typically relies on libhybris to communicate with Android drivers on other hardware. Because Samsung never built its Tizen watches on an Android foundation, developers cannot use this standard compatibility layer.
The technical documentation for the Samsung Gear S2 Classic highlights these difficulties. The device uses an outdated 3.4 kernel, which lacks the abstraction needed to run modern open-source software. Developers are currently attempting a mainline Linux kernel port as an alternative. Sourcing the original code remains a challenge as well, since Samsung no longer hosts the necessary kernel sources for these discontinued models. Some contributors now host these files on personal GitHub pages to ensure the data remains available.
Community-Led Progress Amidst Hardware Limitations
Progress on Tizen hardware is slow and depends entirely on volunteer labor. AsteroidOS achieved success with various Wear OS devices that utilize the libhybris approach. The project recently expanded support to include various Fossil, Huawei, and Ticwatch models. This momentum provides a framework, but it does not directly translate to the proprietary Tizen hardware.
Recent developments show promise for a small subset of the old lineup. The Samsung Gear 2 now runs on a mainline kernel, marking a significant milestone for the project. Developers hope to apply these findings to the Gear S2 and S3. This path requires significant reverse engineering, as manufacturers often provide kernel source code that does not perfectly align with the device's actual hardware performance. The burden of this work falls on unpaid volunteers who must manually map out hardware drivers that Samsung keeps secret.
Future Prospects for Abandoned Hardware
The survival of these devices rests on the commitment of the developer community rather than corporate support. A functional build for the Gear S3 could arrive within the next two years, but no firm timeline exists. Many of these watches will likely reach their battery life limits before developers finalize a stable, user-friendly replacement operating system. This situation serves as a stark reminder of the lifespan of proprietary hardware, where the software lock often outlives the physical components.
