It lacks the glowing screens and frequent notifications that characterize modern smart watches.

The specific model tested is the 42 mm version in black. While other color options exist, the aesthetic choices lean toward silver bodies across the range. The watch relies on physical interaction rather than touch; a crown on the side allows users to navigate through screens by rotating the dial. Pressing the crown toggles the digital display, and the interface resets after a short period. This tactile, analog-forward approach contrasts sharply with the digital-heavy experience found in devices like the Apple Watch.

Initial Setup and App Performance

Setting up the device requires the Withings app, which connects to the watch via an iPhone or Android device. The setup process involves a proprietary charging cradle that necessitates a firm grip to secure the watch in place. During the initial configuration, the synchronization between the watch and the mobile app experienced intermittent delays. While the app prompted for repeated sync attempts during the first few hours, these connectivity issues resolved themselves without further intervention.

The Withings app aggregates health data, including ECG readings, oxygen saturation levels, and respiratory tracking. It integrates with both Apple Health and Google Health to manage historical data. Although the interface includes two prominent tiles for "Readiness" and "Health Score" that are locked behind a monthly subscription fee, the remainder of the app provides sufficient access to activity logs and heart health metrics. Users cannot remove these subscription-locked tiles from the app's home screen.

Battery Life and Daily Utility

The most significant departure from conventional smart watches is the battery performance. The ScanWatch 2 consumed only 2 percent of its charge over an entire day of use, which included overnight sleep tracking. This efficiency allows the watch to function for nearly two weeks on a single charge. In comparison, high-end smart watches often require daily charging to remain operational.

Because the display remains dark until manually activated, the watch does not produce light or unwanted notifications during sleep. This design helps minimize interruptions. Users can configure the watch to track a variety of metrics, including automatic activity detection and high or low resting heart rates. While the digital display defaults to the time and date, the watch focuses on recording granular health data that syncs to the backend app. As testing continues, the goal remains to determine if this passive, low-maintenance approach to health monitoring provides enough value to replace more notification-heavy devices permanently.
