Amazon will launch its satellite internet in South Africa, seemingly beating Musk in his homeland
Amazon announced that it will launch its satellite internet service, Amazon Leo, in South Africa in 2027. This move marks the company's first satellite internet agreement on the African continent. The technology firm plans to work alongside local provider Herotel to offer connectivity across the nation. This development is significant as it establishes a commercial presence in Africa's most advanced economy, aiming to serve the country's population of 62 million.
The service launch arrives amid a debate regarding local regulations. Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Starlink, has criticized South African government requirements for foreign firms to include minority owners in local operations. These policies aim to create opportunities that were restricted under the previous apartheid system. While Musk has refused to move forward under these terms, Amazon has chosen to partner with a local entity to comply with these legal standards.
Amazon currently operates over 390 low-orbit satellites and intends to expand these efforts through additional partnerships, including one with Vanu Inc. This firm specializes in mobile connectivity for developing regions. The potential for satellite internet in Africa remains high, as many people across the continent lack fixed internet access. While Starlink maintains a presence in approximately two dozen other African nations and operates in over 160 countries globally, Amazon is now positioning itself to capture new market share in the region.
The project formerly known as Project Kuiper has already secured launch agreements in several countries across South America and the Asia-Pacific region. By entering the South African market, Amazon signals a push to compete directly in territories where local regulatory alignment is a prerequisite for operations. The South African communications minister has expressed support for the deal, highlighting the potential for improved digital infrastructure in the country.
