Amazon seeks federal approval to launch 5,105 satellites for direct-to-device network
Amazon is moving to expand its reach from space by filing for federal approval to launch 5,105 satellites. This new constellation is designed to provide direct-to-device connectivity, allowing smartphones and other hardware to connect to the internet without relying on standard terrestrial cell towers. The proposed network will combine Amazon’s existing infrastructure with assets acquired from Globalstar, a company Amazon announced plans to purchase for $11.6 billion earlier this year.
The project targets regions currently unserved by wireless providers. By extending connectivity to remote worksites, fleets, and supply chains, the company aims to offer service to users who exist outside the range of traditional networks. Amazon also expects the system to assist in emergency operations, including search and rescue missions.
This initiative complements Amazon’s ongoing work with its Project Kuiper constellation. While Project Kuiper focuses on broader high-speed internet, this new direct-to-device project represents a shift toward mobile-specific satellite communication. The company anticipates the network deployment will begin in 2028, pending final regulatory clearance.
Competition in the low Earth orbit sector remains intense. Amazon faces pressure from existing providers like SpaceX, which operates the Starlink system. With more than 390 satellites already in orbit, Amazon recently confirmed it has enough capacity to begin initial services later this year. The Federal Communications Commission granted a waiver last month, allowing the company more time to meet its deployment targets for its first-generation satellites.
