Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert recently shared a striking perspective on the future of global internet traffic. During the company’s Q2 earnings call, Seifert predicted that non-human traffic will soon dwarf human activity by a factor of 1,000. He suggests that while human internet use remains steady, the sheer volume of machine-generated data is expanding at a rate that effectively renders human input a rounding error in the broader scope of network throughput.

The shift toward machine-dominated traffic hit a milestone in May 2026, arriving earlier than the company’s previous estimates. This surge is directly tied to the growth of automated systems and artificial intelligence. Seifert noted that this growth pattern necessitates greater operational efficiency, as the massive influx of automated data will likely increase security threats across the board.

While discussing financial performance, the company reported $696 million in quarterly revenue, marking a 36 percent increase over the previous year. Despite a significant rise in losses to $205.7 million, investors responded positively to the growth in large enterprise contracts. Cloudflare maintains a lean approach to capital expenditure, planning to keep spending at approximately 14 to 15 percent of its total forecast revenue.

CEO Matthew Prince distinguished Cloudflare’s model from the large hyperscalers that dominate the market. He argued that selling commodity compute capacity, where customers bear the burden of maximizing server performance, is not a strategy he wishes to pursue. Instead, Prince emphasized that Cloudflare focuses on executing specific tasks and managing infrastructure to squeeze maximum output from every hardware asset.

By focusing on serverless offerings rather than renting out raw server space, the company aims to avoid the commodity trap. Investors appear to support this direction, as the company’s share price rose 16 percent following the earnings announcement, reaching a new high. As machine-generated traffic continues to climb, the contrast between raw hardware providers and task-oriented cloud services remains a key point of competition in the sector.
