Gilat Satellite Networks has secured a $14 million contract to expand broadband infrastructure in Peru. The agreement with the Regional Government of Ayacucho operates under the country's Works for Taxes program. This initiative focuses on connecting underserved communities in the southern part of the region.
The project involves deploying over 1,060 kilometers of optical fiber to support 273 public institutions. This includes 236 schools and 37 healthcare facilities. These upgrades aim to provide high-speed internet access to approximately 20,000 residents across 109 localities within an 18-month timeframe.
Beyond laying fiber-optic cables, the plan includes installing network management systems and end-user equipment. It also provides training to ensure local staff can operate the new infrastructure effectively. This project is a clear attempt to integrate rural areas into the national digital network to improve service delivery.
Arieh Rohrstock of Gilat Peru stated that the project will advance digital inclusion for thousands of people. Regional Governor Wilfredo Oscorima Núñez emphasized that this development will directly support public service access. By prioritizing schools and medical centers, the regional government expects to create new opportunities for residents in these remote areas.
This contract reinforces the presence of Gilat in the region. The company maintains a history of operating broadband projects in Peru. By working with local authorities, they are building the physical foundation for digital connectivity in areas where access was previously limited or unavailable.
