Indiana's largest broadband expansion will bring high-speed internet to 123,000 homes
Indiana is launching its most significant rural broadband project in state history. The state will utilize federal funds from the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment program to connect 123,000 homes and businesses. These locations currently lack adequate internet access, which creates barriers for students, local businesses, and seniors requiring telehealth services.
While the program was initially approved in 2021, the rollout faced delays due to shifts in federal oversight and administrative changes. The state initially expected to grant over $800 million for these projects, but that figure has been adjusted to roughly $483 million in state-distributed grants. This shift comes after the current administration updated rules to allow for more competitive, lower-cost technology alternatives, including fixed wireless and satellite options.
Despite the reduction in grant totals, the program maintains a significant impact through local matching funds. When combined with $373 million from local service providers, the total investment in infrastructure will reach approximately $856 million. Work is already beginning in specific areas, such as Decatur County, where local electric cooperatives are finalizing contracts to lay fiber-optic lines.
State officials expect the majority of these projects to reach completion within the next four years. Megan Minor, the state's chief broadband officer, notes that this initiative addresses the long-standing geographic challenges that previously discouraged private investment. The expansion is expected to impact 91 of the 92 counties in Indiana, providing essential connectivity for remote work and education.
As construction ramps up, the state remains focused on project accountability and supply chain management. Officials like State Representative Ed Soliday acknowledge that securing materials and skilled labor will be the next hurdle in meeting the construction timelines. For residents who have relied on cell signals or have traveled to find stable connections, this infrastructure arrival marks a shift in their ability to operate in a digital economy.
