As AI content floods the internet, Pangram raises $9M to detect it
New York-based startup Pangram just secured $9 million in funding to address the rising tide of AI-generated content across the web. Founded by Stanford graduates Max Spero and Bradley Emi, the company aims to provide tools that distinguish human writing from machine-produced text.
The capital injection, led by Menlo Ventures, aligns with the launch of the startup's latest detection models. Pangram 4 focuses on identifying AI-assisted writing, while the new image detection model targets synthetic visuals. According to the founders, the text detection system achieves over 99 percent accuracy by training on tens of millions of human-authored documents to identify the patterns and stylistic choices typical of language models.
Beyond basic detection, the startup offers a browser extension that labels posts in real-time on various social platforms, including X and LinkedIn. This tool provides users with a feed health score that calculates the ratio of human versus AI content. The company also provides access to its technology through an API, which platforms like Substack have already integrated to offer more transparency regarding newsletter creation.
The push for detection technology follows a series of public incidents where AI-generated misinformation or hallucinations caused confusion in legal and political settings. As major institutions like arXiv introduce stricter policies against unverified AI submissions, companies like Pangram, Winston AI, and GPTZero are positioning themselves as necessary filters for the digital ecosystem.
While the technology is not perfect, it offers a way for readers to verify the origins of the information they consume. The founders state that their goal is not to eliminate AI usage but to provide the tools necessary to maintain human signal in a landscape increasingly crowded with synthetic content.
