T-Mobile: 5G Fixed Wireless Is Better Than Satellite Internet

T-Mobile is taking a firm stance on the future of home connectivity. During a recent earnings call, the company leadership stated that its 5G fixed wireless access service offers a superior experience compared to low-Earth orbit satellite internet providers like Starlink. While satellite internet has gained traction in remote regions, T-Mobile argues that its own network architecture provides better performance in the high-density markets where it operates.

Srini Gopalan, the carrier's CEO, highlighted that there remains a significant opportunity to displace legacy broadband options that suffer from poor performance and high pricing. He noted that T-Mobile does not plan to partner with satellite services for home internet, as the company believes its current 5G spectrum allows for faster, more reliable connections for most users. The carrier is focusing its efforts on urban and suburban areas where capacity constraints often impact satellite beam performance.

This position arrives as the competition for home internet subscribers continues to intensify across the United States. T-Mobile currently uses excess 5G spectrum to deliver home internet at speeds reaching 500Mbps, though real-world testing typically shows lower figures. Regardless of the exact speed, the company maintains that the structural advantages of terrestrial cellular networks offer a better foundation for the long-term demands of residential users.

While T-Mobile has collaborated with SpaceX for mobile-to-satellite phone connectivity, the company differentiates that niche service from home broadband. The carrier’s strategy relies on prioritizing its 5G fixed wireless footprint over the potential complexity of integrating satellite technology into the home market. As both companies continue to grow their subscriber bases, the focus remains on capturing customers who are tired of the current state of traditional ISP offerings.
