Apple Seeking 20% OLED Panel Price Cut for iPhone 18 Pro Max
Apple is looking to cut costs as it prepares for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max launch. Reports indicate the company is pushing OLED panel suppliers to lower their per-unit prices by roughly 20 percent compared to the previous model. This shift arrives as Apple deals with the broader pressure of rising memory and component costs.
The target price for these panels is approximately $70, though estimates suggest the actual supply cost may settle closer to $66.50. While Apple has historically negotiated lower component prices with each new generation, this specific request represents a significant reduction in supply costs. The move is particularly notable because the iPhone 18 displays will incorporate the new M16 material set, which increases manufacturing complexity to improve efficiency and color quality.
Samsung Display and LG Display are the primary providers slated to supply these components. Market data suggests a combined output of 87 million panels for the full iPhone 18 series. Samsung is expected to handle the bulk of the Pro Max units, while LG handles a significant portion of the Pro and standard models.
These procurement strategies appear to be a response to inflationary pressures in the supply chain. While Apple seeks these lower costs for displays, analysts still anticipate a price increase for the final devices. Early forecasts suggest the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max could see a $200 jump in retail price, largely attributed to higher memory and storage expenses that outweigh the savings found in other component categories.
