Apple has announced several updates to CarPlay arriving with the release of iOS 27. These additions focus on entertainment, navigation, and voice interaction. The most notable change is the introduction of video playback capabilities. Users can browse and watch videos on their in-car display, but this functionality is restricted to when the vehicle is parked. If the car shifts into drive, the system automatically transitions to audio-only playback for safety. Apple TV is the first confirmed application to support this feature.
Siri receives an upgrade in the vehicle through integration with Apple Intelligence. This allows for hands-free conversations that sync directly with the Siri app on an iPhone. The interface for audio playback also gains a persistent mini-player, giving drivers easier access to controls and progress bars for music, podcasts, and audiobooks. These interface changes include new visual designs and interactive thumbnails that match the updated aesthetics of iOS 27.
Navigation tools see improvements as well. Apps like Apple Maps can now share specific route data with a vehicle to suggest charging stops based on the car's current range. Natural language search is also integrated, letting drivers ask Siri for directions that avoid tolls or highways. Additionally, wireless CarPlay connectivity receives stability improvements, including better GPS accuracy and heading detection.
Drivers can customize their setup with 14 new wallpaper options designed for the automotive interface. Other enhancements include a new voice control template that allows third-party app developers to integrate voice-based interactions into their software. These features require a connected iPhone running iOS 27, and Siri AI functions require a device that supports Apple Intelligence, such as an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. The update will be available to the public in September.
