Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 18 Pro lineup faces significant price hikes as component costs climb. Market research firm TrendForce estimates the base price for the new Pro model could reach US$1,319. This shift represents a 10 to 20 percent increase over the previous year, when the iPhone 17 Pro launched at US$1,099. The primary driver for this surge is the rapid increase in memory costs, which have risen by nearly 400 percent for the 256-gigabyte configuration compared to the same period last year.
Apple appears to be absorbing a portion of these costs to avoid alienating customers. The global economic climate remains tight, and consumer spending habits have shifted toward caution. Despite the steep jump in component pricing, the company maintains its strategy of securing market share while balancing hardware investment. A product launch event scheduled for Wednesday in California is expected to unveil these devices, along with the much-anticipated introduction of Apple’s first foldable smartphone model.
The Foldable Expansion and Production Limits
The foldable segment of the product launch marks a new chapter for the company. Analysts project the starting price for this device to fall between US$2,099 and US$2,299, with premium configurations potentially exceeding US$3,000. These figures place the device in a luxury category far removed from the mass-market smartphone sector. The technology requires specific design considerations, including a dual-camera setup and a capacitive fingerprint sensor.
Manufacturing remains a hurdle for this new form factor. Current output estimates suggest that production is capped at a few hundred units per day. This limitation ensures the devices meet strict internal quality standards before they reach the public. While the foldable model will likely serve as a high-end showcase for the brand, the standard iPhone 18 iterations are slated for release during the first quarter of the following year.
Global Industry Shifts and Memory Scarcity
The smartphone industry faces a broader memory supply crisis. Artificial intelligence infrastructure development consumes massive amounts of memory chips, leaving less supply for standard consumer electronics. Data from IDC indicates that global smartphone shipments are projected to drop by 16.7 percent this year, representing the largest annual contraction on record. This supply crunch limits the ability of manufacturers to keep retail prices stable.
Brands are reacting to these conditions with immediate price adjustments. Huawei, Xiaomi, and Honor have already raised prices on their existing catalogs, with some adjustments reaching US$149. Counterpoint Research reports that over 40 percent of all smartphone models worldwide have seen price hikes this year. This phenomenon is a first for the industry, where competition previously favored steady or declining prices.
Tarun Pathak, a research director at Counterpoint, notes that memory now dictates the cost floor for manufacturers. Brands find their margins squeezed, forcing them to pass the burden to the end user. As a result, many consumers choose to delay their hardware upgrades, wait for major sales events, or opt for refurbished devices instead of buying new. The entire industry is recalibrating as the link between high-end AI development and consumer hardware costs continues to tighten. The transition reflects a permanent change in how tech companies value and source the memory required to power their latest mobile hardware.
