Why There's A Flashing Red Light On Your iPhone Screen

If you have noticed a faint red light flashing near the top of your iPhone screen, specifically when using the device in a dark room, you are not seeing a hardware malfunction. This light is an infrared emitter associated with the Face ID TrueDepth camera system. Because the human eye cannot typically perceive infrared light, it usually remains invisible. However, certain conditions in low light reveal these rapid pulses as the sensor maps your facial features to verify your identity.

This infrared technology serves several operational purposes beyond simple unlocking. It powers the Attention Aware features, which adjust device behavior based on whether you are actively looking at the screen. For example, your iPhone uses these sensors to maintain screen brightness or lower the volume of alert notifications if it detects your gaze. These sensors also authenticate app purchases and password access on all models released since the iPhone X.

It is important to distinguish this infrared light from the orange dot indicator. The orange dot is a software notification that appears when an app accesses your microphone. Unlike the microphone indicator, which serves as a privacy alert, the red infrared pulse is a standard function of the biological security hardware inside your device.

While you cannot disable the physical infrared sensor because it is core to Face ID functionality, you can reduce the frequency of its activity. By accessing the Face ID and Passcode menu in your settings, you can toggle off Attention Aware Features or the requirement that you look directly at the phone for Face ID to activate. Be aware that disabling these settings removes the device's ability to react to your gaze, which may result in less convenience for notification management and screen brightness adjustments. The hardware will still perform basic scans for biometric entry as long as Face ID is active.
