OnePlus will continue software updates, all devices move to ColorOS with Android 17

OnePlus is shifting its operational strategy as the brand prepares to exit several global markets. As part of this transition, the company confirmed that its long-standing software skin, OxygenOS, will be phased out for newer devices. All eligible OnePlus hardware will move to Oppo’s ColorOS beginning with the Android 17 update cycle.

This move aligns OnePlus software with the broader Oppo ecosystem. While the brand has maintained its own identity for years, the underlying software base for these devices has increasingly mirrored ColorOS. Consolidating these systems allows the company to focus its engineering resources on a single platform, which they state will improve the delivery speed and quality of future security patches and version updates.

For current users, the update to ColorOS remains optional for those with eligible devices. OnePlus claims it will continue to provide maintenance support for older models that do not qualify for the Android 17 update. If users choose to move to ColorOS and find the experience does not meet their needs, the company plans to provide rollback options to return to previous OxygenOS versions.

Despite the significant changes to its software roadmap and regional presence, OnePlus states that it will honor existing commitments regarding software updates and security patches for its active product line. Similar transitions are occurring within the Oppo umbrella, as other brands under the same corporate structure are also moving toward ColorOS. This shift marks a definitive change in the direction for a company that built its early reputation on its unique software experience.
