Augmented reality hardware often comes with high price tags and closed architectures, but the DIY community is finding new ways to bypass these barriers. Creator Mañolo recently debuted the Sideloader 3.3, a compact AR headset designed to bring home-built wearable displays into a more practical, functional space.

The project marks a shift away from off-the-shelf development boards. By moving to a custom-designed PCB featuring a bare ATmega32u4 chip, the electronics package becomes significantly smaller. This adjustment allows for a cleaner integration into a 3D-printed housing, moving past the rough construction methods seen in earlier prototypes.

Key to this iteration is the addition of native head tracking. By integrating an inertial measurement unit directly onto the custom board, the headset transmits real-time rotational data. Once calibrated via a standard figure-eight movement, the device connects to SteamVR to project a floating interface over the wearer's physical surroundings.

Construction details reflect a focus on serviceability. The headband includes dedicated slots for the electronics, and components are secured with screws rather than melted plastic. The optical combiner, which creates the augmented reality effect, is crafted from a simple semi-transparent plastic sheet cut with a template and finished with a rotary tool. This assembly reflects the ability to achieve complex results with accessible tools and basic components.

This project confirms that high-end features like SteamVR compatibility are accessible to those willing to design their own hardware. The Sideloader 3.3 stands as a clear example of how focused design can turn raw components into a working wearable display.
