Meta Consolidates Remote Display Features
Meta has rebranded its Remote Desktop feature to Virtual Display, signaling a shift toward a unified interface for streaming external content into Quest headsets. This update arrives alongside Horizon OS 2.7, which rolled out during the week of August 17. The new name acknowledges that the software now handles more than just computer desktops. It incorporates functionality previously housed within the Meta Quest HDMI Link app, allowing users to pipe video from gaming consoles, handhelds, and mobile phones into the headset via capture cards.
This consolidation creates a central hub for all virtual screen needs. Users no longer rely on disparate apps to switch between a work PC and a gaming console. The system now supports up to three large virtual monitors, maintaining parity across the most common desktop environments. By moving the HDMI Link capabilities into the Virtual Display app, Meta is simplifying its software stack and preparing to phase out the standalone HDMI Link utility entirely.
Mac Parity and Quick-Connect Interface
For months, Mac users trailed Windows in terms of available features for the Quest remote display experience. That gap has narrowed significantly. The most noticeable change is the implementation of the quick-connect prompt, a feature previously exclusive to Windows 11. When a user looks at their physical computer, the headset detects the machine and renders a floating button. Clicking this button starts the session immediately, removing the need to navigate through menus or manually select the device from a list.
Testing on an M2 MacBook Air confirmed that this prompt now functions as intended. The experience extends to older hardware, including a 2017 27-inch 5K iMac running macOS Ventura, which previously struggled with connection stability under the old Remote Desktop software. While not every Intel-based Mac supports the quick-connect prompt, the core Virtual Display software appears more reliable across a wider range of Apple silicon and older Intel-based hardware configurations.
Input Forwarding and Remaining Limitations
Virtual Display now supports input forwarding on both macOS and Windows. In earlier iterations, the connection was essentially a one-way street, allowing users to view their desktop but not control it with Quest controllers. That limitation is gone. Users can now use their Quest touch controllers to navigate the cursor and execute clicks within the virtual workspace. This change makes the tool viable for basic tasks that require active interaction with the host machine.
Some constraints remain. A computer's connected mouse or trackpad does not act as a system-wide pointer for the Quest headset. While a trackpad can control the remote Mac desktop, it cannot move the cursor out of the virtual screen area to interact with Horizon OS menus or panels. Third-party apps such as Fluid have demonstrated that it is possible to pair Bluetooth mice directly with the headset to control both virtual screens and system menus. This suggests that the current limitation in Virtual Display is a software choice rather than a hardware inability.
Future Implications for Quest Productivity
Meta is clearly targeting a more streamlined user experience for workers and power users. By bringing the Mac client up to speed with Windows, they remove a major barrier to adoption for creative professionals who rely heavily on macOS. The ability to switch between display formats like Portrait, Compact, Wide, and Ultrawide allows for a high degree of customization that competes with physical multi-monitor setups.
What comes next is the refinement of how these virtual environments coexist with the native Quest interface. As the software evolves, the goal remains a more fluid transition between a physical laptop and the immersive digital workspace. Users should watch for future updates to the input handling, specifically whether Meta decides to allow cross-platform pointer movement between the computer screen and the Horizon OS environment. For now, the move to a single, feature-rich app marks a significant step toward making Quest a primary tool for remote computing.
