Update to Cosmos Brings Foveated Rendering to PC VR
No Man's Sky now supports eye-tracked dynamic foveated rendering on SteamVR. The feature arrived as part of the game's latest Cosmos update. Developers at Hello Games integrated the tech to direct rendering resources toward the exact spot where a player looks. This method improves image sharpness while reducing the overall load on system hardware.
Foveated rendering relies on high-speed tracking of the user's pupils. By prioritizing visual fidelity in the center of the field of view, the software lowers the demand on the GPU. Hello Games previously added this capability to the PlayStation VR2 version of the game in August 2023. That earlier update successfully addressed player complaints regarding blurriness on the Sony hardware.
Performance Demands and Technical Hurdles
No Man's Sky remains a taxing title for virtual reality setups. The procedural generation engine consumes significant CPU power, while high-resolution VR output adds heavy strain to the graphics card. Running the game at stable frame rates on standard hardware often requires significant sacrifices in visual settings. Many players find they must lower resolution scales and texture quality just to maintain an acceptable experience.
Personal testing on a machine equipped with an RTX 3070 and Ryzen 5 5600X showed that even with reduced settings, the game struggled with performance. Upgrading to a Ryzen 7 9850X3D and an RTX 5070 Ti allowed for better output, but the title still necessitates a compromise compared to flatscreen play. While developers haven't confirmed the specific gains for this patch, the technical approach mirrors the successful rollout seen on the PlayStation VR2.
Market Timing and Steam Frame Expectations
This update coincides with the anticipation surrounding Valve's upcoming Steam Frame headset. Current market data from the August 2026 Steam hardware survey shows a relatively small user base for headsets with built-in eye tracking. Combined, the PlayStation VR2 and Meta Quest Pro account for a narrow fraction of the total SteamVR population. Most of the estimated 1.8 million to 3 million monthly active users on the platform do not yet have access to this hardware.
Valve's device could change this trend by bringing eye-tracked optics to a broader audience. Because the game's performance profile is too heavy for mobile-based standalone chipsets, developers have a clear incentive to prepare the PC version for users of high-end equipment. Capitalizing on this update now positions the game for the expected influx of players eager to test their new hardware. It is a calculated move to ensure the game remains a benchmark for future VR performance.
