New Steam Frame update sheds more light on Valve’s verification system
Valve has pushed a backend update to its Steam Frame system that clarifies how games receive verification status. Previously, the system required all titles to meet specific native display resolution targets to earn a Verified badge. This created friction for 2D games, which often received a Playable rating due to this resolution constraint rather than actual performance issues.
The update removes the native resolution requirement for 2D titles. This adjustment has already impacted the status of Portal 2 within the system. Where the game was previously marked as Playable with caveats regarding resolution, it now carries a full Verified status. This shift confirms that the hardware will support 2D gaming as a core feature rather than treating it as a technical limitation.
This backend adjustment serves as the latest indicator that the release of the Steam Frame is approaching. Earlier signs included the discovery of the device's first virtual environment and the localization of the Welcome Tour tutorial. Reports also track increased shipments of the hardware in recent weeks.
While rumors of a native VR port for Portal 2 have circulated for years, this update suggests the headset focuses on offering a native 2D play mode for traditional games. Valve continues to prepare its infrastructure for a launch, with insiders suggesting an announcement may follow the conclusion of the Steam Summer sale. We continue to monitor the backend changes for further specifications on the upcoming hardware.
