Vivo takes aim at Apple’s Vision Pro with its Vision mixed reality headset

Vivo has entered the mixed reality market with the official launch of the Vision Discovery Edition. Marking the company’s 30th anniversary, this headset represents the first foray into the sector by a Chinese smartphone manufacturer. The device features dual 8K micro-OLED displays with a resolution of 3840 x 3552 pixels and covers 94 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut, positioning it as a direct competitor to high-end hardware currently available on the market.

Design choices prioritize comfort and ergonomics for the wearer. The Vivo Vision weighs 398 grams, significantly lower than the 650-gram alternatives often criticized for causing physical strain during extended use. The hardware includes a curved glass visor, downward-pointing cameras, and an external battery pack. Vivo provides four different sizes of fabric light seals and eight foam padding options to better accommodate different facial structures.

Software duties fall to the proprietary OriginOS Vision, which leverages Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform to manage spatial tasks. The system boasts an ultra-low latency of 13 milliseconds, supported by eye-tracking technology and hand-gesture recognition. The device supports spatial audio, 3D video recording, and the projection of a 120-foot virtual theatre screen for media playback.

Currently, the headset is available only within China. It carries a retail price of 10,000 yuan, roughly equivalent to 1,789 Singapore dollars. This pricing strategy places the unit at a fraction of the cost of similar devices from American competitors. The launch marks a pivot for the brand as it moves beyond mobile handsets to compete in the expanding landscape of wearable spatial computing hardware.
