Bryan Kohberger files a petition to challenge his guilty plea and conviction

Bryan Kohberger, currently serving four consecutive life sentences for the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, has filed a petition for post-conviction relief in Ada County District Court. This legal maneuver serves as an attempt to challenge his previous guilty plea and conviction outside of the standard appeals process.

Kohberger pleaded guilty last year to the murders of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin to avoid a trial. He is now representing himself in these proceedings. While he has not clarified the exact legal basis for his petition, he claimed in a recent interview that he is innocent and was misled into his original confession.

In his statement, Kohberger characterized the original state case as a narrative with faulty premises. He suggested that the lack of a full trial denied the public necessary clarity regarding the events at the off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho. He maintains that his plea was the result of false promises and disinformation.

State officials are preparing to defend the conviction. Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador confirmed his office remains ready to ensure the original verdict stands. Family members of the victims have publicly criticized the move, describing the petition as an attempt to regain public attention and avoid the conditions of his current confinement.

This filing brings renewed focus to a case that concluded with a plea deal in July 2025. The court has yet to rule on the merits of his claims regarding the withdrawal of his plea.
