2 killed in shooting near Seattle's Space Needle, fire department says

Authorities in Seattle are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Sunday evening near the Space Needle. The Seattle Fire Department reports two people died at the scene after medical staff attempted resuscitation. At least five other individuals sustained injuries during the incident.

A 56-year-old woman remains in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center. Three other victims, including a two-year-old boy, are currently in stable condition at the same facility. A fifth person suffered minor injuries and declined transport to a hospital.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson confirmed that police have two suspects in custody. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at Seattle Center, a major destination housing the Space Needle and Climate Pledge Arena. The Bite of Seattle food festival was underway at the time, drawing large crowds to the area.

Witnesses described a scene of immediate confusion as the shooting began. Many attendees initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks before realizing the situation and fleeing the grounds. Several people reported ducking for cover or moving away from the area until they reached a secure distance.

The Seattle Police Department secured the site shortly after the reports emerged, requesting the public avoid the vicinity. Federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the scene to assist local law enforcement. Investigators are continuing to examine the area for evidence as the community responds to the violence at the public event.
