Hawaii Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke indicted on bribery charges
A Hawaii grand jury indicted Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke on 12 counts related to bribery and corruption on Friday. The indictment includes charges of criminal conspiracy to commit bribery and the falsification of campaign committee reports. The allegations originate from an investigation by the state attorney general into campaign contributions received from lobbyist Tobi Solidum. Prosecutors claim these funds were traded for political support regarding a 2022 Covid-19 testing contract while Luke served as chair of the House Finance Committee.
Attorney General Anne Lopez confirmed the indictment following a monthslong investigation. This case is broad in scope, as the grand jury also indicted four other individuals, including former state Representative Ryan Yamane. The legal proceedings highlight a significant moment in state oversight as authorities examine the intersection of campaign finance and legislative action.
Luke, who took office as Governor Josh Green’s deputy in 2022, stepped away from her duties in April when the investigation first gained public attention. At that time, she also announced the end of her reelection campaign. The situation has prompted calls for resignation from state leadership, with Governor Green stating that the lieutenant governor should address the matter by stepping down to allow the state to move forward.
As of Saturday, Luke has not entered a formal plea. Her office has not provided a response to inquiries regarding the charges.
