Recap: Lindsay Clancy trial begins with opening statements, ex-husband on stand

The trial of Lindsay Clancy began Monday in Plymouth Superior Court. Clancy is accused of killing her three young children in their Duxbury home in January 2023. Prosecutors allege she acted intentionally and rationally on the day of the deaths. The defense argues that Clancy was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis at the time and did not receive the appropriate medical treatment for her condition.

Patrick Clancy, the ex-husband of the defendant, was the first witness called to the stand. During his testimony, he walked the court through his observations of Lindsay's mental health in the months leading up to the incident. He described her periods of depression and anxiety, noting that she struggled after returning to work following the births of their children. He also recounted the events of the day, stating that she appeared to be in a good mood before he left the house to run errands.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington centered his opening statement on the lack of proper psychiatric care for his client. He noted that Clancy was prescribed multiple medications and that the defense disputes the prosecution’s characterization of her actions. Reddington also presented details regarding the suicide attempt Clancy made following the deaths of her children, which left her paralyzed.

The trial is expected to continue for several weeks. The jury of 18 members will hear from various witnesses including police, medical experts, and first responders to determine whether the defendant bears full criminal responsibility for the deaths of Cora, Dawson, and Callan Clancy.
