The selection of a new nominee comes after the previous primary winner, Graham Platner, resigned his campaign following sexual assault allegations. Jackson has leaned into his background as a former logger and his experience with union organizing to mobilize support across the state.

While Jackson currently holds a strong position, other candidates remain in the field. Jordan Wood, a former congressional staffer, plans to continue his campaign while expressing concerns regarding Jackson's previous endorsement of Platner. Dan Kleban, a business owner, is also continuing his efforts to build support ahead of next week's state convention.

Competitors like Nirav Shah have argued that they offer better electability against Republican Senator Susan Collins. Shah points to primary results and the challenge of unifying the party across different regions of Maine as key factors for voters to consider. Despite these concerns, some party members are shifting their focus to Jackson, noting his ability to organize and mobilize the party base.
